With almost 25 years of professional experience, he has worked across a wide range of sectors –including finance, aviation, automotive, agri-food, insurance, energy and healthcare– both in Spain and internationally. His practice combines rigorous legal insight with a deep understanding of the business environment.

His advisory work focuses on analysing and formulating legal solutions that provide certainty, reliability and strength in business operations, as well as on safeguarding his clients’ interests in the areas of corporate law and mergers and acquisitions (M&A). In litigation, his knowledge and experience before courts, tribunals and arbitral institutions –combined with his mastery of different jurisdictions and procedural orders– have consistently translated into the effective handling of complex, multi-jurisdictional cases and successful outcomes throughout his career.

In addition, his background in legal advisory, investment analysis and corporate risk management has led him to specialise in anti-money laundering matters, developing his own tool designed to strengthen companies’ internal control and compliance systems.

His expertise in Commercial Law, from both a corporate and transactional perspective as well as in litigation, makes him one of the strongest options for the defence and advancement of his clients’ business interests.

He has over twenty years of experience in the legal field and has been a practising lawyer since 2002. He holds a Law degree from the University of Valladolid and an Executive MBA from ESADE Business School. For several years, he has pursued doctoral research in Commercial Law examining the duties and potential liabilities of governing bodies in publicly listed companies.

In 2025, he founded the law firm Lopezmarqués with the aim of putting his knowledge, experience and dedication – as well as that of the professional team that accompanies him – at the service of a legal advisory model based on knowledge, analysis and strategy, fully oriented towards the client’s interests.

He began his judicial career in 1983 and was soon promoted to the position of Judge in Valladolid. In 1996, he was appointed a member of the Governing Chamber of the High Court of Justice of Castile and Leon.

In 1997, he joined the Criminal Chamber of the Spanish National High Court, and the following year was elected to its Governing Chamber. Over the course of a decade in this court – competent in highly complex and high-profile criminal cases such as terrorism, organised crime and major financial fraud – he took part in rulings concerning international criminal cooperation and extradition. He served as the reporting judge in landmark cases such as the Botín Case, whose 2005 judgment defined the criminal liability of company directors and was later upheld in full by the Supreme Court.

He has been a member of several European Union expert committees on judicial cooperation, taking part in initiatives such as Falcone, Phare and various Twinning projects aimed at aligning the legislation of EU candidate countries and training judges and prosecutors in anti-money laundering enforcement. For the past twenty-five years, he has been a regular speaker at national and international conferences and seminars on this subject.

In 2007, he joined the Provincial Court of Madrid (Audiencia Provincial de Madrid), where he served until his retirement from the judiciary in 2016. He currently lectures at the Faculties of Law of the University of Valladolid and the Complutense University of Madrid, and has been practising law in Madrid since 2017.
